Been a while since I have added anything to the conversation. That is because I am the food editor for this blog and there hasn’t been a lot to review lately. BUT – last week a major misfortune turned out to be a cause for a major celebration.
Every day around ten o’clock in the morning both Andre and I get a dog treat. It’s something that has been going on for a while and something that we both look forward to. A lot.
Well, a few days ago, when Patty went to the dog treat box and looked in it was empty. “Sorry, guys,” she said. “All gone.”
Well, apparently the confused, distressed look on both of our faces was enough to convince Patricia that something needed to be done.
Call the fire department. Call the police.
Do something. Don’t just say, “Sorry guys, all gone! That is just not going to hack it.
As luck would have it there was a dog biscuit cookbook sitting next to the dog biscuit box.
Thank you, God!
Patty has had it for a couple of years but has never followed through with making any. Her excuse was that the recipes called for things like steak and cream cheese and other delicacies and old skinflint wasn’t going to make them for us! She told Jon, “They have got to be kidding, I don’t even buy steak for myself – and now buy it for the dogs?”
Seemed very reasonable to me and Andre but Jon agreed with her. Two-legged cheapskates is what I heard Andre say, but I was playing the “poor, little me” role and I didn’t drop character for an instant.
Yes it did.
Patricia took another look at the box, looked at Andre, opened it up, looked at me, took out the cookbook and the very first one was doable. It called for flour, corn meal, cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese. She made a face, read it some more. Looked in the refrigerator. Opened the snack and cheese drawer. Pulled out some cheddar. Picked up the jar of Parmesan cheese and looked at it. Looked at us. Looked at the Parmesan cheese and put it back on the shelf. “I think Cheddar will work just fine,” she said.
I was not going to argue. Nothing wrong with Cheddar. I like Cheddar. Sure beats nothing at all was my reasoning.
So that’s the long and short of it. The treats turned out great. The only sad point is she is still only giving us one (sometime two) treats a day. Working on that. I have been working on a new sad, pathetic, woe-be-gone look and I’ve about got it down. Trying to get Andre to practice it but he says he’s more into baying real loud than looking like a sad stiff.
Here is the recipe below. If you have any low-cost dog biscuit recipes please share!
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup unbleached white flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup cheddar cheese
1 large egg
3/4 cup water
Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Knead together until well mixed. Turn out onto a floured surface and roll flat to about 1/4 inch thickness.Sprinkle with a little extra Parmesan cheese. Cut with cookie cutters.
Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown
Pat’s cheap modifications: No Parmesan cheese – doubled the cheddar. No cheese on top. Had no wheat flour so used 2 cups of white flour. Added a lot more flour as dough was very sticky. Added almost an extra cup! Also baked at least an hour.
