It occurred to me recently that though I have the process of bed control down to a very fine art there may be new young felines out there who haven’t a clue.
Since its one of the very basic House Management techniques to be acquired I took it upon myself to develop a simple tutorial, completely illustrated with a step-by-step process.
First, wait until the sheets have been stripped from the bed. In our house this takes place on Monday’s but this process works equally well at any time. When the sheet stripper has grabbed the sheets and gone out of the room immediately claim your spot.
Make sure you are completely comfortable because you need to stay here for at least an hour while the sheets are washed and dried.
You could of course wait till the last minute to stake your claim but psychologically you won’t have quite the staying power if you do so. I tend to jump right up after the sheets are taken out and get comfy.
When the Sheet Stripper returns they will be in a different mind set than before. They now think of themselves as Pro Bed Maker and they will often have a “get this job done now” attitude that if you are not prepared can result in a power play with the Bed Maker.
They will dump the first sheet on the bed. Do not move. Hold your ground.
They will start to make the bed. Remember you have more right to be on the bed than they have to make the bed. Stay firm.
If you give in now it will be all over. Adjust as need be but stay on the bed.
Eventually you may have to retreat a bit. Do not go far. Hold your ground. Every inch is important.
Get comfortable. This could be a while. Be calm, new opportunities will develop.
They will start pushing you to the max. Don’t budge.
Let them work around you.
Here is where it gets sneaky. Lot’s of cats quit at this point. Wait till they turn their back and regain your ground.
Sure the bed is getting made but . . .
You are still on the bed!
This is good.
In many cases if you have made it this far they may let you stay.
Please share your own cat bed making experiences. We are here for each other.
